Metagenomic studies sequence nucleic acids (DNA, RNA) from a sample containing a mixture of organisms. The sequence data are used to understand the taxonomic and/or functional composition of the community - usually with a focus on the microbial diversity present (the microbiome). Metagenomics can be amplicon-based, targeting one or a small number of genes (i.e. 16s amplicon sequencing), or can be performed with shotgun approaches in which the full complement of DNA (or RNA in the case of metatranscriptomics) is sequenced.
